Saint James Minquiers Modern ecru/marine

Saint James Minquiers Modern ecru/marine

The striped shirts appeared at the beginning of the 19th century among the sailors. Both fishermen and sailors on merchant ships wore it as work clothes. In 1858 the navy uniformed the clothes of the sailors and regulated the exact number and width of the stripes. 20mm wide and at least 21 white stripes in number, it had to be according to the decree. The blue stripes must be 10mm wide and 20-21 in number. On the sleeves 15 white and 25 or 15 blue stripes have to be seen. As an alternative to blue, red, yellow, or green contrast stripes were used.
Not only in the French Navy, the striped shirts have established. Also in Russia and the USA were, or are still striped shirts a solid uniform component of the sailors.
