J Barbour & Sons Ltd was founded in 1894 in South Shields in the northeast of England to supply the local dockworkers and seamen with weatherproof clothing. Barbour is a fifth generation family business and holds three Royal Warrants from the British Royal Family. Today, the family business is in its fifth generation and is still based in the northeast of England.
