HISTORY OF PENDLETON
 
More than 150 years ago, the Pendleton Woolen Mills story began with British founder and weaver Thomas Kay, who immigrated to Oregon in 1863. He founded Pendleton Woolen Mill, which gradually branched out from simple, colorful striped patterns - which emulated Hudson's Bay Company blankets - to designs inspired by Native American tribes.
 
Pendleton discovered the business model of Native American trade blankets made for local tribes along the Columbia River. The blanket designs featured the traditional colors and patterns of the Native American tribes of the Southwest, and to expand the business further, they also visited the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni tribes. The impressions gained in this way were incorporated into the colors and patterns of the blanket models. These blankets are now coveted and valuable heirlooms and established Pendleton's legendary reputation.
